Coach Supervision

25/10/2023

Why I love being a Coach Supervisor and working with other coaches in 121 or Group space.

Within the group, the synchronicities and themes arrive as each person shares what they are ready to reflect on. Often the work resonates through each session and it is an energetic experience that I enjoy holding the space for. The ripples change us as the coach and reach into the work we do with our clients.

When doing my training , I remember talking about having Super Vision. To be able to notice the unseen and the unspoken as a Coach and the expansion this can allow in our client work.

The metaphor for me is Owl - known for her wisdom and keen eyesight. (Her Super-Vision). Noticing small things from her perch and swooping down to take a closer look. Moving silently and swiftly to the various viewpoints. Working in the darkness, she forages in the shadows to bring something to light. Little escapes her radar. And if it does. She is likely to notice next time.

My Favourite Quotes :-

Supervision is gathering the treasures of the past into the competencies of the present for the well-being of the future

Taken from 50 Maori psychologists and discussed in the “Handbook of Coaching Psychology” Pg 436 - Michael Carroll

Supervision is “a compassionate appreciative enquiry…It wakes us up to what we are doing. (or not doing)

Handbook of Coaching Psychology  Pg 434 (Ryan, 2004:44)

Supervision With Me:-

  • A safe , non judgemental space. Where you can be. Just as you are.
  • A space to reflect on your personal and professional being
  • Space to appreciate where the bigger system comes into the relationship between you and your client.
  • A space to transform your work and identify where the blockages are
  • A space to acknowledge and celebrate you.
  • Supervision is an experiential space - where you take what you learn and notice and apply it into your next client session. The learning spiral is continuous.

When I qualified as a Supervisor in 2012 I wrote in my Supervision Philosophy about the supervisee bringing their question and putting it “on the table”.

My personal development since then as a Coach, Supervisor, EFT Practitioner and in the last 4 years a Visionary Shamanic Practitioner would now draw me to say:-

Join the Supervision Owl in the wild. We may sit on a log, by the fire or on a picnic blanket together. We shall breathe and observe and notice the seen and unseen of the energetic work that is coaching.

I’m ready to go beyond the Edges.

Supervision Offers Insightful Guidance:

Supervision supports the Coach in the way that the Coach supports their clients.

Coaching can feel lonely at times. Having a safe space to discuss your client concerns is essential for your resilience and mental health.

I wish I’d known … I wish I had done XYZ - no one is perfect.  When we are entangled with resonating client stories it is hard to see the woods for the trees. We can be moved from our coaching centre.

My role as Supervisor is to allow space to understand the resonance and in future sessions you will notice if those connections get triggered.  Change starts with personal Discovery and Awareness.

Discovery ~ Growth ~ Freedom

  • Do you feel embarrassed that a client triggered anger?
  • Maybe you noticed your personal judgement rising.
  • Maybe you wanted to tell them what to do?

We can explore these scenarios and notice where your personal story intrudes on your professional one.

  • Does your internal voice drive certain behaviours with your clients?
  • How does this show up in the coaching space?
  • Does it also show up in our Supervision space.
  • What can we reflect on and seek to understand?

5 Ways To Get The Most From Attending Supervision?

  1. Supervision Style - Like coaches, Supervisors have their own style. Speak to and meet more than one Supervisor. Attend sample sessions if you can. As a minimum, have a chemistry session. Consider what you want from Supervision. Ask how the Supervisor works.
  2. Reflective practice - How do you feel after each coaching session? Capture it in a journal, drawing, voice message to yourself. You can bring these observations to Supervision.
  3. System - When you are working with your client you are experiencing the system they operate in. What data does this give you? Notice language, behaviours and beliefs. Explore these during Supervision.
  4. Resonance - When something personal of ours can resonate and hook into our client’s story. This can impact the way we operate professionally as their coach. Supervision can bring these moments to light.
  5. Experiential Learning - what you discover in Supervision can flow straight into your next client session. This enables continual professional growth and development.
